PlayStation Free Game Removed From Users' Libraries Without Warning

It was fun while it lasted

There is nothing better than gaining access to a free game, especially if said game was not even supposed to be free in the first place.

That was the case for one PlayStation title which was accidentally made free for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users back in October courtesy of an unexplained glitch.

However, after two months, Sony has finally rectified its mistake, putting the game back to full price.

So what actually happened?

Well, on 17 October, Mimimi Productions and Daedalic Entertainment’s stealth tactics game, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, was made free on the PlayStation Store for seemingly no reason at all.

Available to claim for free for a couple of hours, both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users immediately snagged the freebie, especially with Blades of the Shogun being widely regarded as one of the best stealth games of recent years.

After the glitch was discovered, Sony shut it down a few hours later but surprisingly, downloads were not revoked and so those who were quick enough to snag the game for free, got to keep it.

However, now two-months later and Sony has officially rescinded the downloads.

Sony Has Cracked Down On Downloads... Finally

If you are one of those players who hoards games in your downloads for years, this is unfortunate news but if you did happen to play Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun upon grabbing it for free, Sony’s decision will not affect you at all.

Sony has yet to release a statement as to why it took it two months to revoke the download, or why the glitch happened at all.

Additionally, we do not know if it has compensated Daedalic Entertainment for the glitch which would have seen the company lose out on quite a bit of money depending on how many users made use of the free download.

Nevertheless, it is safe to assume that said users had more than enough time with Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, especially as it reportedly takes around 20-30 hours to complete.

With the game being accessible for two months, this would have been more than enough time.

Unfortunately, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is now back to full price and with Mimimi Productions since shutting down, it is unlikely to ever receive a sequel.

Though if there is a lesson to be had here, it is to make use of your future free games before Sony notices.
