Seven years after it was first released, one PlayStation exclusive will have its servers taken offline for good as of today.

Released in 2017, the PlayStation 4 exclusive Gran Turismo Sport is officially shutting down its online servers today. The racing game by Polyphony Digital is the twelfth game in the much-loved Gran Turismo series and the seventh title in the main series. However, it seems as though this one isn’t as loved as the rest as Sony have announced the closure of its servers.

Although the game will be celebrating its seven-year anniversary this October, it seems as though it won’t get that far after its shut down began back in December. The DLC was delisted from the PlayStation store and as of today, is no longer available to purchase at all. Additionally, players will not be able to access its online mode but will still be able to play it offline as the game itself remains listed.

As to why Gran Turismo Sport is being taken offline, Sony has yet to confirm. However, we can assume it is because the game has not been performing as well as some of the other titles released back in 2017.

It is safe to say that 2017 was an incredible year for games with titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Persona 5, NieR Automata, Hollow Knight and Horizon Zero Dawn hitting various platforms.

Now seven years on, it is clear which games have stayed relevant and unfortunately, Gran Turismo Sport is not one of them.

"On January 31, 2024, at 06:00 UTC, the online services of the PlayStation 4-exclusive software 'Gran Turismo Sport' will come to an end. Prior to this on December 01, 2023, we will also end the distribution of purchasable Add-On items from the PlayStation Store that can be used in-game," reads an official statement from Sony.

"After the end of service date, it will no longer be possible to utilise online services such as the Community, Open Lobby, and Sport Mode, nor online features/items such as custom liveries. The offline portions of the game can still be played, including purchased Add-Ons. We would like to thank the many users of the Gran Turismo Sport online service since its first launch in 2017."
