PlayStation just announced the last sequel we'd ever expected

Returnal fans can ... return ... to the game's world in graphic novel form

Oh, Housemarque. You’re such a tease. When the studio took to social media earlier this week teasing an imminent reveal, let’s face it, we all assumed a Returnal expansion or sequel was on the way.

After all, what better time to announce such a project than when Returnal is celebrating its three year anniversary?

That’s not exactly what happened though, somewhat given away by Dark Horse Comics’ repost of the tweet.

Technically, we are getting a sequel of sorts but one of the comic book variety. Returnal: Fallen Asteria is a brand new story from Housemarque’s Gregory Louden and Khalil Osaimi with art by Igor Lomov and Aaron Järvinen.

Intertwining with Returnal’s narrative, Fallen Asteria centres around explorer Selene Vassos shortly after she’s crashed on the alien world of Atropos.

The synopsis reads: "Selene must fight for her life against horrific hostiles that live beyond every shadow and a trail of distorted memories. Mystery shrouds the world of Atropos, and Selene begins to wonder: will she find answers at the end of her journey, or is this nightmare inescapable?"

Take a look at Returnal, the game itself, in action below. It’s well worth checking out if you own a PS5.

The graphic novel has also been partly adapted as an animated short which is free to watch and enjoy online.

That’s not all that’s on the way. Returnal fans can also grab a 244-page art book aptly titled The Art of Returnal. I’m an avid collector of such things and will picking this one up.

It’s the perfect chance to look into the skilled craftsmanship that went into creating such a stellar game.

Both Fallen Asteria and The Art of Returnal will be released on 22 October later this year.

As for what Housemarque is cooking up gamewise, hopefully we’ll get some clarity in the coming months or year.
