New details on the PlayStation 6 suggest it’ll include one massive change compared to the previous console, and one a lot of people aren’t going to like.
There’s an argument to be made that we don’t actually need a PlayStation 6 just yet as many would say the PlayStation 5 hasn’t done enough to be replaced yet.
Regardless of your opinion Sony is going ahead with its next home console, and some of the design aspects are quite bold.
According to details received by Insider Gaming the PlayStation 6 will be a digital console by default, but a detachable disc drive can be bought for it separately.

So this means when the console launches you’ll either be able to buy PlayStation 6 as an all-digital console, or buy it bundled in with a disc drive add-on.
Something similar was done with the PlayStation 5 but well into the console’s lifespan, and only when a new variant of the console was being released.
Apparently the PlayStation 6 will have this feature so the overall production and shipping costs of the console can be decreased.
This does somewhat line-up with other reports that say the PlayStation 6 will cost a similar amount to the PlayStation 5 Pro, with an even cheaper option similar to the Xbox Series S coming as an alternative.

It’s unclear how well this will work in practice as digital gaming is becoming much more popular over time. It’ll be interesting to see what the combined price is for a PlayStation 6 plus the disc drive.
Also rumoured to be in development is a portable PlayStation 6 a bit like the PlayStation Portal, but with more in common with a Nintendo Switch 2 as you’ll apparently be able to dock it and play it on a TV rather than in handheld mode.
