As the days go by, we are getting closer and closer to the launch of the PlayStation 6 and fans are expecting the next-gen console to pack a hell of a punch.

At the time of writing, the PlayStation 6 may not have been officially announced but we do know that it is currently in development at Sony, albeit in the very early stages.

With each generation of PlayStation console offering even more power and technical capabilities, we can only imagine what the PlayStation 6 will be able to offer.

It may be a few years until we finally give up our PlayStation 5 in order to get our hands on the next iteration but a recent video from AMD shines some light on the ongoing project.

Posted to the official AMD channel, AMD’s Jack Huynh and Mark Cerny, lead architect of PS5 and PS5 Pro can be seen discussing Project Amethyst, the collaboration between the two companies which will help push the PS6 to unheard of boundaries.

The collaboration between Sony Interactive Entertainment and AMD aims to focus on “Machine Learning-based technology for graphics and gameplay” which will ultimately lead to benefits all across the gaming industry in the future.

In the video, we can hear just a sneak peek of the new technologies that will be used in advancing gaming performance, immersion and efficiency for the PlayStation 6.

This will be down to some key features: neural arrays, radiance cores, and universal compression.

Neural Arrays will see a collection of compute units come together to share and process data like a single AI engine.

Radiance Cores are new ray traversal hardware which will help deliver high performance, real-time ray tracing, and path tracing.

Last but not least, Universal Compression consists of a new system that evaluates and compresses all available data within the GPU in order to dramatically increase memory bandwidth.

“This technical preview highlights AMD and Sony’s ongoing collaboration to enhance the next generation of gaming hardware and experiences,” the official press release reads.

“While these technologies currently only exist as simulations, they are expected to appear in future consoles in a few years’ time.”

It is still early days for development on the PlayStation 6 but it is safe to say that thanks to Project Amethyst, users can expect the most powerful video game console yet when it is finally released over the next few years.

Until then, let us get a few more PS5 exclusives under our belt.
