PlayStation 5 gamers surprised with returning PS2 classic that'll hit you in the nostalgia

Here's a blast from the past

PlayStation has recently put more focus on emulating older games and bringing them to a modern audience via the Classics catalogue available via PlayStation Plus.

Recent releases have not only seen slightly enhanced visuals but also the inclusion of save states and rewinds, which make those tough old-school games feel a little kinder.

As a PlayStation Plus subscriber you can play Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion for free this month

It makes sense then that Sony is giving us a blast from the past by releasing Summoner into their PlayStation Plus catalogue, a launch title from back in the days of PlayStation 2.

If you don’t remember Summoner, it’s not a surprise. It didn’t make a huge splash at the time, but it did have a rather dedicated fanbase all the same.

It was an action RPG that had players forming a team of heroes and summoned monsters in order to battle both gods and men.

An interesting title at the time, Summoner combined both real-time battling with turn-based tactics and it tried to break the mold of what we knew about RPGs. Nowadays, it looks and feels a bit dated, but the story itself still holds up as one of classic good versus evil tropes.

If you find yourself wanting to dabble in a bit of PlayStation history, you can find the game as part of the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription and it comes with all the modern emulation features we’ve seen recently.

On top of this, you can unlock trophies as you play, including a platinum trophy for completing everything. It takes around 35-40 hours to complete and you can utilise the rewind feature if something proves a bit too tricky, or the controls feel a bit clunky.

There’s hope that Sony will start working through their more popular back catalogue following on from this and other classic releases to bring back some PlayStation history for new players.
