Playstation 5 gamers livid as updates somehow make their games look worse

Wouldn't be surprised if some of these developers have already received an earful from Sony

Sony’s brand-new, top-of-the-line, ultra super duper impressive $700 PlayStation 5 Pro is… making some games look worse than they do on a standard PlayStation 5.

In a recent Twitter post from Forbes’ Paul Tassi, folks have been chiming in on their experiences with Sony’s latest PS5 upgrade.

In short; some titles on the PS5 Pro are performing worse than they did on standard PS5s.

Alright, so, lemme clarify a few things here.

This only applies to a few PlayStation 5 Pro “Enhanced” games, none of which are first-party, Sony-published titles.

The offending titles are (but are not limited to) Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Star Wars Outlaws, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Silent Hill 2, EA Sports FC 25 and Alan Wake 2.

So, how? Why? Well, it seems to be a result of a combination of factors.

Firstly, the PS5 Pro’s “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution” option is essentially just AI-upscaling. It helps some games, and it hurts others. It’s an optional feature however, so that’s not the real issue.

Take a look at Silent Hill 2's trailer below.

The main issues are a result of PS5 Pro-specific patches, which (in some cases) have removed previous standard PS5 settings from certain games.

This means that a few of these upgrades have actually overwritten previous performance and graphical-related settings for PS5 Pro users.

As a result, some third-party titles look worse or perform worse on the PlayStation 5 Pro, and there’s no option to revert to the previous settings that were available on base PlayStation 5s.

If you’re curious about any of the further details, I highly suggest checking out Digital Foundry’s review of the PlayStation 5 Pro. They’re smarter than I am so they’ll explain it better anyway.

I should also note that we’ll definitely see improvements to some of the offending titles down the line, so this should only be a temporary issue.

Still, makes me feel a lot better about holding off on buying a PS5 Pro. “It’s about persistence”, right Sony?
