PlayStation 4 Finally Wrapping Up After Iconic 12-Year Run

The writing is on the wall

Following official announcements from Sony and several end of service announcements from multiple publishers, it seems that support for the PlayStation 4 is finally winding down for good.

The past few weeks haven’t been great for people that still use a PlayStation 4 as their primary console.

Sony has been pretty transparent about their desire to wind down support for the PS4 over the past year, but the ultimate nail in the coffin was their announcement that PlayStation Plus will begin to focus on PlayStation 5 games, starting from January 2026.

“As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog starting January 2026”, Sony revealed in a post on the PlayStation Blog earlier this year.

However, it seems the process has been accelerated somewhat, at least on behalf of publishers.

The past few weeks have seen multiple live-service game publishers announce that support for the PlayStation 4 versions of their games will be coming to an end, including arguably the biggest live-service title on the platform.

First up, Genshin Impact’s publisher MiHoYo announced that support for the PS4 version of the game will be ending in 2026. Then, a couple of days ago, PUBG’s publisher Krafton announced something similar. These two announcements also followed on from a statement by Black Desert’s publisher Pearl Abyss, who revealed that PS4 and Xbox One support for their MMORPG will also be coming to an end.

Unfortunately, at least where live-service titles are concerned, EoS announcements like these are to be expected when a console is on its last legs, as developing patches for outdated hardware begins to become a more time consuming and less profitable endeavour.

I wouldn’t be surprised if several more publishers jump on the bandwagon in the coming weeks, as it’s clear that the majority of players have already jumped ship to the PS5 anyway.

But hey, you’ve got one thing the PlayStation 5 will never have, PS4… the demo for P.T., forever installed on a harddrive that I will never, ever wipe.
