A bunch of players are apparently surprised to learn about one of Death Stranding 2’s “hidden” mechanics, with one user even stating that “99% of players never knew about this”... even though I’m pretty sure I remember getting told this was a thing in the first Death Stranding’s tutorial.

Over on Twitter, user Synth Potato shared a clip of what they believe to be a completely hidden mechanic in the new PlayStation 5 title Death Stranding 2.

“Death Stranding 2 has a completely hidden mechanic where if you and other players keep using the same path, it eventually becomes an actual road and all the rocks/trees in the way get cleared,” they revealed in a Tweet.

Now, as cool as this is, yeah, they definitely straight up tell you this in the first game.

That being said, the origin of the mechanic is pretty cool.

It stems from the well-known phenomenon of “desire pathing”, which occurs when people decide to intentionally avoid official paths in real life in favour of quicker, or less tricky routes.

This leads to desire paths appearing, usually because people constantly step over grass and kill it, leading to new paths forming.

In Death Stranding 2, this mechanic is supposed to mimic that same real-life phenomenon. By tracking players constantly using the same route over and over again and creating new paths, it essentially allows the developers to provide players with “desire paths” in-game.

Even if you didn’t know this mechanic was a thing, you’ve likely encountered it regardless by simply following the most obvious routes in the game.

It’s a clever little way of making the entire world feel a bit more lived in, and it’s one of the reasons that the Death Stranding games have such a dedicated fan base. Kojima’s mind works in mysterious ways.
