I’m still catching up on a few of 2023’s bangers, so you can imagine how 2024 has only exacerbated my backlog.

I’m imagining that more than a few of you are in the same boat, so I should hardly think that you’re on the lookout for additional titles to play.

If you do find yourself with such a yearning though, then I have a free game that you can pick up for a limited time.

This one’s titled Europa Universalis IV, and it’s perfect for all of you strategy fans.

Developed by Paradox, Europa Universalis IV launched back in 2013 and while I don’t want to make anyone feel old, that may now classify it as a ‘classic’.

In this historical-based strategy sim, you’ll rule your own land, rewriting history and building an empire.

If you like the Sid Meier’s Civilization and Age of Empires franchises, you’ll feel right at home here.

Speaking of, Civilization VII launches next year - and we had the opportunity to preview the game at this year’s Gamescom.

“Developed by Paradox Tinto, the fourth instalment of the award-winning Europa Universalis series gives you a chance to control any nation in the world and lead it through four dramatic centuries - starting from the late middle ages and culminating in the Napoleonic era,” reads the synopsis.

“Rule your land and dominate the world with unparalleled freedom, depth and historical accuracy. Write a new history of the world and build an empire for the ages.”

Over on Metacritic, the game secured a respectable score of 87 from critics, with Steam users awarding a very similar approval rating of 86%.

At full whack, Europa Universalis IV would set you back £34.99, but devs are currently running a free-to-play ‘weekend’ which actually extends beyond the weekend, finishing on Wednesday 23 October.

That’s not all, during this time you can pick up the game for just £4.54 - that’s a discount of 87% - with that offer also lasting until 23 October.

So give it a whirl while you can and make the most of that offer if you have a good time.
