It may have first been released 20-years ago but that has not stopped fans from regarding Star Wars: Republic Commando as one of the best Star Wars games of all time.
Developed by LucasArts, Star Wars: Republic Commando was first released back in 2005 as a tactical first-person shooter and although it was met with generally favourable reviews upon launch, it has since become a cult classic.
So much so that Aspyr released an enhanced port of the game for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 back in 2021.
That being said, Star Wars: Republic Commando has now received a new-gen remaster and better yet? It is completely free to download.

Courtesy of Chaos007 over on ModDB, Star Wars: Republic Commando RTX offers a reimagined experience with full ray-tracing lighting, upgraded materials, and early retexturing through NVIDIA RTX Remix.
The catch is that this mod only covers a small portion of the game so far: the intro cinematic, prologue and first level of the Geonosis campaign.
However, according to the creator, “it includes foundational RTX lighting, texture replacements, and mesh adjustments — enough to showcase the visual potential of this classic title under modern rendering.”
Fans will notice overhauled clone and droid designs, new weapon models, PBR materials, updated sky lighting, and enhanced visual effects which will make Star Wars: Republic Commando look a lot different to what fans remember it looking back in 2005.

If you are still unsure, the mod’s creator has added before-and-after screenshots which show just how different this free download makes the game look.
Unfortunately, we do not yet know if the modder will work on any more levels of the game or if it will remain a demo but it is definitely still worth checking out if you are a fan of the original game.
After all, it is completely free to download right now.
