Skyrim: World at War Is an Unexpected Free Game Mode

Quite the dramatic overhaul

Skyrim modders have done the unthinkable, and have transformed the entire game into a WW2 Call of Duty title.

With Call of Duty being as big as it is nowadays, it’s hard to believe that nearly 20 years ago, it was just a simple World War 2 shooter with a campaign and multiplayer.

With whatever the series has become now, that rather grounded approach to depicting war in a video game is something a lot of gamers really want to get back to.

It may not be a brand new game, but Skyrim modders have at least brought back the grounded feel of the early Call of Duty games to The Elder Scrolls now with the new World at War mod.

The mod takes its name after Call of Duty: World at War, which was the fifth game in the series and marked the beginning of the Black Ops sub-series that has become so popular now.

As expected, it transforms the entire game into a World War 2 battlefield, featuring soldiers, tanks, artillery and air support duking out for control of the land.

These battles are dynamic and unpredictable, and can break out at any moment in any of the four corners of Skyrim’s map.

The mod also features WW2 weapons ranging from bolt action rifles and assault rifles, to flamethrowers and rocket launchers. It’s quite a dramatic departure from what you’re used to seeing in Skyrim, but it works nonetheless.

As the mod’s creator, roman1945, promises, these weapons come with their own unique animations and have variable damage, recoil, rate of fire and magazine capacity. It’s essentially a brand new game in Skyrim’s engine, featuring gameplay mechanics and features that the original game had never intended to use.

“All of Skyrim has turned into a modern battlefield as hundreds of squads and platoons are now patrolling the lands. Squads of infantry supported by heavy tanks are constantly moving throughout the roads and wilderness of Skyrim,” reads the mod description.

“When a battle breaks out, you can expect it to quickly escalate into a full blown battle, with Officers calling in heavy artillery barrages, air support, and nearby squads/platoons to quickly join the battle, making for the most dynamic and unpredictable battle.”

If you fancy trying it for yourself, you can check out the Call of Duty - World at War mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition by downloading it from Nexus Mods.
