Resident Evil fans have ridiculed a PC ‘photo realistic’ Requiem upgrade that kinda looks like AI slop.
It feels like we’re in a generation where visuals and performance for top-tier video game productions are about to shift into a new gear, with its photo realism and super smooth framerates. However, as realistic as this NVIDIA DLSS 5 upgrade looks for Resident Evil Requiem, it just feels off.
In an article and video demonstration from PC tech experts Digital Foundry, they go hands-on with NVIDIA’s new photo-realistic generated AI and lighting technology.
To the credit of this tech, as detailed in the preview, it can vastly improve textures, such as the details on a football jersey in EA Sports FC 26 or the fantastic stubble and skin on Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil Requiem. However, not everything about this tech looks great. I mean, it does, but when it comes to the face of Grace Ashcroft, it looks like an AI slop.
What Have They Done to Grace Ashcroft?
While the attention to detail looks nothing short of incredible when it comes to photo realism of a face on Grace Ashcroft, as well as the environment and her hair, the AI-generated improvement makes the Resident Evil Requiem character look nothing like her real-life face model, Julia Pratt and a little Uncanny Valley.

It kind of reminds me of when people on social media ask AI software like ChatGPT or Grokk to make someone look “more beautiful”. I think this would be great if the NVIDIA tech actually made Grace look even more like her face model, but it really doesn't, and the internet has reacted accordingly.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that while AI technology continues to advance, talented modders can make our favourite video games, including the likes of Hogwarts Legacy, look better without AI-generation.
“What is NVIDIA even doing? The intended character design is tarnished,” exclaimed Redditor Voltzner.
“Make her look like AI, yes, hmm, yes,” replied OddArmadillo4959.
“They completely distorted the original art design to create some AI slop,” said BShep_OLDBSN.
“That's not Grace, that's gross,” declared vcvemmefalardesexo.
As you can imagine, Resident Evil fans have ridiculed the AI upgrade across social media with some wonderful memes. Such as turning the female stalker into Sydney Sweeney, giving Mr X the looks of a male Calvin Klein model, or Leon S. Kennedy with a super duck pout, and much more.
I can see what the NVIDIA technology is trying and in some cases, has achieved, but clearly, the AI upgrade hasn't got it quite right with faces yet, at least with Grace.
To be fair, there are examples in the Digital Foundry hands-on video that actually make Grace look like her real-life model, but that’s not always the case. What’s more, it's made the NPCs of Starfield look fantastic. So, it can achieve a high-quality level, but it needs more consistency. This tech has so much potential. But for now, it needs to go back to the drawing board.
Resident Evil Requiem is out on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
