Pokémon fans need to try this incredible remake for themselves, and you can download it for free right now.

While Pokémon Scarlet & Violet left a lot to be desired, the next Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is promising big things for the series.

Unfortunately fans won’t get their hands on the new game for quite a while, not until 2025, though fear not as you can play a phenomenal remake of Pokémon Fire Red right now, for free too.

Worth mentioning that this isn’t an official product from the Pokémon Company, it’s a ROMhack called Pokémon Unbound. It tells an original story, with new characters, more Pokémon and plenty of quality of life improvements compared to vanilla Fire Red.

In terms of legality, ROMhacks aren’t illegal, as you can do whatever you want with your own game, though downloading, copying, or sharing ROMs online is illegal, so don’t do that.

In a Reddit thread asking what fan’s favourite ROMhacks are, a lot of options were shared spanning a variety of different games.

However the one that stood out amongst the rest was Pokémon Unbound, a modified version of Pokémon Fire Red.

One player described it as in its “own tier” from any other ROMhack played, and another said it’s the "best I’ve ever played, period.”

Another went on to say it blew all other games out of the water, and packs around 300 hours of content in comparison to the “20, maybe 30 hours of gameplay from a regular mainline game.”

One player said they played it for a mere 19 minutes and added it “feels like a real Pokémon game or even better.”

If you’re a fan of ROMhacks, you should definitely give this one a go, or if you’re yet to play one for the first time, this would make a pretty good starting point.
