Super Mario reimagined as a Pokémon game sounds like it should be impossible if we’re entirely honest and yet this bold PC release has quickly changed our minds.
Some Pokémon fans reading this might have fond memories of the good old days when the series was exclusive to Nintendo GameBoy devices.
Since the Internet and online forums weren’t a thing, you’d hear about games through word of mouth or magazines which means you’d hear your fair share of hoaxes, especially for Pokémon.
One famous hoax was Yoshi from the Super Mario series being a secret, catchable ‘mon in Pokémon Red & Blue, which would be easily disproven today but was a little more believable back then.

Years later, catching Yoshi in a pokéball is officially a reality thanks to this stunning free PC game, Super Mariomon.
Official Pokémon games can only be found on Nintendo hardware and some mobile devices but PC users get more thanks to ROM hacks and custom-creations.
Super Mariomon is a ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald made by Too Many Productions and as the name implies it transforms the Mushroom Kingdom into an inspirational Pokémon adventure.

The story is as follows: “Princess Peach is hosting a game for everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom to play! The first person to get all 8 Power Stars from the various worlds of the Mushroom Kingdom will be granted a wish!”
With the eight Power Stars being stand-ins for the eight Gym Badges you need to collect in Pokémon games your adventure begins as you catch and battle the various critters Mario is usually stomping on, not taming.
The full game was released in April 2025 and has recently been updated to celebrate its one-year anniversary.
Shared by Pokémon Fangame News the new additions include: Randomizer Mode, Two battle facilities, Link trading and battling, Shiny Hunting and much more.
The scale of this ROM hack is incredibly impressive. It boasts 151 “Pokémon” to catch, all with custom-made sprites. There’s even a post-game included for those who want to keep going after claiming all the Power Stars.
It’s the kind of collaboration that we’d love to see happen for real, as while Nintendo tends to reserve its crossovers for Super Smash Bros we’ve seen what can happen when the company tries something unexpected, like Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
Super Mariomon is available to download on PC for free right now. You’ll need a legally obtained ROM of Pokémon Emerald to get it working, and as we all know it’s illegal to download one off the internet, you need to rip the ROM from your own physical copy of the game. Don’t be a pirate.
