Fallout: Vault 666 is not the new release we were expecting

Rip and tear

A new Fallout release takes us back to the apocalyptic vaults, but not in the way we were expecting.

It’s been a while since we last had an official Fallout game by Bethesda, but the series has been kept alive through new fan projects and mods.

Then there’s also the TV series from Amazon, which if anything revived interest in the series and got people talking about it again. I mean, it convinced me to replay Fallout: New Vegas, after all.

The new Fallout: Vault 666 is a mod for Doom 2 (called WADs within the Doom community), which was released earlier this year, is also something budding vault dwellers may want to check out. It seems like the perfect mix of Fallout and Doom.

“The Doom Dweller- you were chosen by The Overseer to enter Vault 666 and locate the water chip,” reads the WAD description.

“If you fail, your home, your friends, and your pet bunny will perish. Traveling the wasteland, your investigations lead you to a cave entrance. But what's this? No vault dwellers in sight, but more mutants than you can shake a boomstick at! It stinks like rotten meat!

“So, pump that power fist, rev that ripper, and unload your 10MM, right into the face of hell! Welcome to Vault 666!”

What follows is pretty much what you’d expect from an addon like this. You’re ripping and tearing through the mutants that have inhabited Vault 666.

It appears that the mod is using a mix of Doom 2 assets with sprites and graphics from the original Fallout games, which makes the mod a very interesting crossover.

It also retains the Fallout sense of humour, with various jokes and references to the series sprinkled throughout. You can even use Dogmeat as a weapon, which is the first screenshot that caught my eye.

Since the mod’s release in January this year, creator Carl Asami has released several patches to polish it up and improve the experience, with the latest update being in March.
