As the wait for Fallout 5 continues, fans of the series may want to try out the new Vault 666 mod.

We’re probably still quite a few years away from being able to play the next Fallout game, but in the meantime there’s a surplus of different fan-made mods and expansions that we can play.

Fallout: Vault 666 is one such release, where fans have come out to make a dramatically chaotic new experience in the Fallout universe. And it should mean you get your Fallout fix for the time being.

It’s a Doom WAD (essentially a mod for Doom which adds custom levels) that adds a new stage based on a cursed Fallout vault and hugely inspired by the original 1997 game.

“War. War never changes. And neither does the Doom Dweller- you were chosen by the overseer to enter Vault 666 and locate the Water Chip. If you fail, your home, your friends, and your pet bunny will perish,” reads the mod description.

“Traveling the Wasteland, your investigations lead you to a cave entrance. But what's this? No vault dwellers in sight, but more mutants than you can shake a boomstick at! It stinks like rotten meat!

“So, pump that power fist, rev that ripper, and unload your 10MM, right into the face of hell! Welcome to Vault 666! Death in the Vault is about to change!”

What features does the mod have?

As the mod is still being run in Doom, expect a lot of fast-paced action in a 3D environment against enemies that are represented as 2D sprites.

It features Fallout 1-inspired weapons such as The Powerfist, The Ripper, The Colt 6520, The Winchester, The Turbo Plasma Rifle, and the Red Ryder BB Gun. It also has iconic pickups such as Nuka-Cola and Jet.

Dogmeat also appears as a companion, and you’ll have to find him inside the vault somewhere. I mean, no Fallout game is complete without your trusty canine companion, so I wouldn’t think too much about the mod’s justification for putting him in harm’s way here.

If you’d like to check out Fallout: Vault 666 now, be sure to go to the official page for it on ModDB.

It’s just had a new v1.51 update, which improves spawn points, adds new easter eggs, and makes other various fixes.

You’ll need to own a copy of Doom 2 to play it, and that also means having access on a platform that allows you to mod the game.
