The Elder Scrolls devs return with open world RPG The Wayward Realms

The DNA is clear to see

Developers of The Elder Scrolls return with a promising upcoming fantasy RPG considered to be a spiritual successor to the series that recently had a successful Kickstarter campaign.

The Elder Scrolls is one of the most popular video game properties of all time that has immersed generations and will continue to inspire developers for years to come. However, as for what the future of the Bethesda series holds, back in 2018, The Elder Scrolls VI was revealed to the world during E3 but since that time, we’ve heard very little else about the title.

Check out The Wayward Realms trailer below!

At the time, we have no idea as to when The Elder Scrolls VI will be released but some fear that it will be a next-gen title. Either way, when that time comes, hopefully, the next entry of the beloved fantasy RPG series will knock it out of the park and will not be plagued with infamous Bethesda bugs at launch.

However, while we wait for the arrival of The Elder Scrolls VI, you might want to check out this upcoming indie RPG. The game in question is called The Wayward Realms and leading the project are Ted Paterson and Julian Lefay, who in 1996 worked on The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall.

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign that ended on 29 June 2024, the developers at OnceLost Games intends to launch The Wayward Realms as an early access title on Steam, before releasing it in its full form. Judging by the gameplay trailer, the DNA of The Elder Scrolls series is clear to see but The Wayward Realms has its own twist.

The Wayward Realms promises to have an “ever-changing setting with “procedurally generated cities, dungeons, towns, and points of interest scattered between, allowing for adventures and exploration of epic proportions not seen in any other game.”

Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the map of The Wayward Realms looks to be huge across 500,000 square kilometres. As you would expect from any respectable fantasy RPG, this upcoming title will also feature character creation, multiple choice that will shape your story, various character classics, skills, weapons and much more.

At the time of writing, The Wayward Realms does not have a release date as it's in the very early stages of development. Its Kickstarter page does mention an intended launch of December 2025 but as with most crowdfunding campaigns, delays can be expected.
