Fans of The Legend of Zelda have learned about a cancelled game that we’ll never see, breaking the hearts of a million adventures of Hyrule.

The first game to arrive in this beloved series was in 1986 for the NES with The Legend of Zelda. Considered to be ahead of its time inspiring the roguelike genre that we know today, The Legend of Zelda set a new standard of what is expected of an RPG on consoles.

From The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time to 2023’s Tears of the Kingdom, fans cannot get enough of this series and they’ll be hoping that the next entry, Echoes of Wisdom will continue the tradition of pumping out absolute bangers.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom features a unique mechanic for this series and those are Echoes. These Echoes, which are taken from everyday objects in the game can be used to access previously unreachable areas or even used as weapons to plonk on an enemy's head.

However, Echoes of Wisdom was nearly a very different game as brought to our attention by Twitter user, Rebecca Stone and was almost a dungeon maker, perhaps similar to Super Mario Maker.

In a Q&A session with Echoes of Wisdom director Tomomi Sano, producer Eiji Anonuma and Grezzo developer Satoshi Terada, they revealed The Legend of Zelda game that never came to be.

When ideas were pitched to Nintendo, its development studio Grezzo wanted to make a Zelda game a little bit different from most and this is when the dungeon maker approach was pitched, a concept seemingly teased in 2019’s Link’s Awakening remake.

“We were exploring a few different ways to play the game in parallel. In one approach, Link could copy and paste various objects, such as doors and candlesticks, to create original dungeons,” Terada explained. “During this exploration phase, this idea was called an 'edit dungeon' because players could create their own The Legend of Zelda gameplay.”

Hopefully, when Nintendo announces the next entry in The Legend of Zelda series, it will be something inspired by Super Mario Maker. As for the more immediate future, Echoes of Wisdom releases exclusively for the Nintendo Switch this Thursday.
