Nintendo drops mysterious teaser for future of Switch

What's the meaning of this?

Nintendo’s latest Switch related teaser is rather enigmatic.

While Nintendo isn’t known for giving fans the announcements they want, it’s not normally this mysterious either.

When fans kept claiming the Nintendo Switch 2 was going to be revealed, Nintendo shut that down without much hesitation.

Will you be playing Mario & Luigi: Brothership?

Yet this announcement? It’s shrouded in mystery.

Shared on 9 October, Nintendo said, “We will be performing a test related to a new feature for Nintendo Switch Online [...] existing Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will be able to apply to participate on a first-come, first-serve basis.”

Even though the post links to an information page about the play test, what the test involves isn’t mentioned at all.

It's all very cloak and dagger.

“No idea what I just read but sign me up,” commented Twitter user @IntroSpecktive.

“This is interesting. I’m looking forward to something new!” remarked another.

As you’d expect, some have even got their hopes up that this is related to the Switch 2 somehow.

We’d love that to be the case, but other than our blind optimism, there’s nothing here that suggests the unknown feature is related to the new hardware.

It could well be a feature we’ll see on the Switch 2, but that doesn’t mean it’s exclusive to it in any way.

Most users are fine with it being for the current console, so long as it’s something to do with the arrival of achievements.

They might be meaningless in reality, but we love it when a notification tells us about an achievement/trophy we’ve just unlocked.

Whatever this surprise feature is, it’s been better received than Nintendo’s latest hardware reveal.

Fans are roasting this upcoming release, with their fury mainly fuelled by their disappointment.

The future of Nintendo brings more questions than it does answers.
