Nintendo Drops Surprise Mario Kart World Update, Fixes Several Historic Issues

It's so much better now

Mario Kart World has received a surprise update from Nintendo that fixes some of the problems players have had since launch.

This was quite a surprise as while Nintendo does drop a new update for the game here and there they very rarely pack obvious changes, at least not as obvious as this one.

Mario Kart World Update 1.4.0 makes several enormous changes to the game from new settings for custom races and even changes to the tracks themselves.

When setting up custom games you can now toggle on the Custom Items setting which lets you be more selective over what items will appear during races and how common.

Don’t like the Blue Shell? Wish the Mega Mushroom would appear more often? Now you can tailor your experience to whatever you fancy. It’s pretty great. You can even de-select all items except the Kamek item, which is the one that turns you into a random playable character. This is great for those who don’t have a complete roster of characters yet while the Kamek item is still randomised you’ll at least be hit by it more often.

That’s not all though. Arguably the biggest change the new update makes is changes to some of the tracks.

Mario Kart World’s gimmick is players need to drive to the next course in-between races, and while that’s a neat concept quite a few players found the in-between tracks quite boring.

The new update spices them up a bit and primarily focuses on the tracks that were just straight lines.

Now they have some curves and different obstacles to keep things interesting. You can find the full list of altered tracks online.

As for the rest of the changes they’re just general fixes and balancing updates targeted at glitched areas on the courses and weird item behaviour.

It’s a solid update and fixes a lot of issues players had with the game since launch, but we’re still waiting for more.

We Need More Characters And Courses

Mario Kart 8: Deluxe sort of spoiled us a bit with its roster and while some of the deep-cut characters found in Mario Kart World are cool we’re missing some obvious inclusions.

For instance I’m sure many fans want to see more Nintendo characters pop up as guest racers, like Link, Kirby and even Samus now that she has her cool motorcycle from Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

Maybe the developers are just binding their time, and perhaps we can expect more substantial updates once a few more of the game’s issues get ironed out.
