Nintendo has announced that on 10 June, it’ll discontinue Twitter, or X, integration on Nintendo Switch, following in the footsteps of PlayStation and Xbox.

Nintendo Switch users are currently able to post screenshots and videos captured on their device straight to social media platform, but this will soon no longer be possible.

The upcoming changes will also prevent Nintendo Switch users from sending friend requests to social media users.

Announcing the news, Nintendo said, “As of June 10, 2024, it will no longer be possible to post screenshots and videos to X (formerly Twitter) from the Nintendo Switch's Album, or send friend requests to social media users via the Friend Suggestions feature.”

Delving into the full statement reveals that users will continue to be able to post to Facebook although “this service may also be discontinued at a later date”.

Within Splatoon 3, posting to X directly from the mailbox in Splatsville, Inkopolis Plaza and Inkopolis Square will similarly be disabled - although this notably affects Facebook too. The image will instead simply be sent to your Switch’s album.

Take a look at Splatoon 3 in action below.

Splatoon 2 users will also no longer be able to directly post to X, whilst “the ability to post Super Smash Bros. Ultimate screenshots from the Album in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu to Smash World, in the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app, will also become unavailable.”

As for the disabling of the Friend Suggestions feature, “you can continue to use [this] from smart devices, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U.”

In the digital age we live in, it’s a shame to see such integration pulled away but this doesn’t come as a total surprise.

We’ve seen both Sony and Microsoft pull X integration. This is believed to be due to Elon Musk’s API changes, which includes raising the price of access to the social media site.

Responding to Nintendo, X wrote, “The gaming community is one of the largest and most vibrant communities on our platform, and we are dedicated to enhancing and supporting gaming-related features. As part of Nintendo's planned discontinuation of sharing content to X from the Nintendo Switch, from June 11th, users will need to download Switch gameplay media directly to their smartphones and share it natively on our platform.”

“Our partnership with Nintendo remains strong, and we are working together to ensure a smooth transition for all users. We will continue collaborating with partners to bring new and exciting experiences to our global gaming community.”
