Nintendo has announced the Switch 2 will support up to 120fps framerates, which sounds like a match made in heaven for anyone playing Mario.

The original Nintendo Switch only had support up to 60fps, meaning even if game developers wanted to support higher framerates, they couldn’t because of the Switch hardware.

While series like Captain Toad or Super Mario Party might not necessarily have benefitted from higher frame rates, franchises like Mario Kart and Splatoon certainly would.

Check out the trailer for the first confirmed Nintendo Switch 2 game, Mario Kart World.

In today’s Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo showed off the upcoming console with some new features.

During the direct, it was announced that the upcoming console will support up to 120fps framerates.

Before you get too excited, this only applies to select games. We’re not expecting every single title to use this. So some games may still be restricted to 30 or 60fps.

However, it should be reasonable to expect Nintendo will put this into their biggest games.

Nintendo used 2D Mario as an example to show how 120fps looks on the console, so we should expect some of the company's biggest titles to feature this.

Judging from subsequent trailers, it looks like games will have a Quality Mode and a Performance mode, similar to how it works on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The handheld LCD screen will use a display capable of 120fps, but for those playing with it docked, hitting those frames will depend on if your TV supports it.

In addition to this, Nintendo has also revealed the Switch 2 will have a 1080p screen, with 4K resolution support for compatible games while docked to a TV.

It’ll also have 256GB storage, eight times the storage of the original Switch.

Altogether, it looks like the Nintendo Switch 2 will be giving the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S a run for their money with these much needed upgrades.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will launch on 5 June, 2025.
