Hogwarts Legacy major update officially confirmed, but it'll cost you

Only a few weeks left to wait

Hogwarts Legacy finally arrived on the Nintendo Switch in November of 2023, nine months after it first landed on new-gen consoles.

It’s, on the whole, a pretty solid port, albeit one that had to make a fair number of concessions.

Nintendo Switch users shouldn’t feel left out though; the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions share said concessions.

For example, Hogwarts’ external bridges were replaced with internal corridors, reducing the need to load wide sweeping vistas.

Elsewhere, doorways were replaced with loading screens.

The changes are subtle and, admittedly, don’t ruin the experience of the game.

That being said, I’d argue that the Nintendo Switch’s version of Hogwarts Legacy is the most inferior but that’s set to change very soon.

On 5 June, Hogwarts Legacy will receive a new-gen update to coincide with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, and it’s now been confirmed that existing owners will be able to nab the update for $10 / £10.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is almost here, and we’re so excited.

What’s on offer is actually a little bit more than your standard port.

Avalanche Software previously revealed that Hogwarts Legacy’s Nintendo Switch 2 version is actually a new build that contains “next-generation assets”, so if you do upgrade, I’m imagining you’ll see a marked improvement in the quality of the game.

Hogwarts Legacy fans should expect to see improved visuals and textures and faster loading speeds, plus new features are being added as the Nintendo Switch 2’s touchscreen controls and mouse Joy-Con functionality will be taken advantage of.

Considering that this isn’t a standard port then, it’s great to see Avalanche offer this relatively cheap upgrade path.

If you don’t already own the game, the new Switch 2 version will set you back £49.99.

There’s set to be a ton for us to enjoy on the Switch 2 at launch besides Hogwarts Legacy.

Mario Kart World is, of course, on the way, as are improved versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, plus Cyberpunk 2077 is landing on the console.

Bring on June.
