Fallout fans heartbroken over quietly cancelled game

This one may never see the light of day

It’s an accepted truth that we’re going to be waiting quite some time for Fallout 5.

Why? Well, The Elder Scrolls VI isn’t exactly close to launching and Fallout 5 certainly won’t be the focus of Bethesda’s efforts until after that happens.

Following the launch of Starfield and its first, and seemingly only, expansion, Shattered Space, it should be full steam ahead on The Elder Scrolls VI right now.

The game could still be a couple of years away from launch though, which is why many can’t see something like Fallout 5 arriving until 2030 or beyond.

It’s a tough pill to swallow.

I’d love to tell you that I have some happy news to console you, but I’m afraid it’s quite the opposite.

Filming on season two of the Prime Video series Fallout has been postponed amidst the devastating wildfires taking place in LA, and now it’s come to light that Bethesda actually cancelled a planned Fallout release several years ago.

ICYMI: We played snog, marry, irradiate with the cast of Fallout.

Imran Khan, the former senior editor of Game Informer, has shared that Pete Hines, former head of publishing at Bethesda Softworks, once revealed to him that Fallout 4 was originally set to release on the Nintendo Switch.

“This was explored for Switch some years ago,” he wrote on ResetEra. “To the point where Hines told my boss at the time to expect it, who then had me prep a story. Never came to fruition, though.”

There’s no reason given for why this port never launched.

Perhaps developers struggled to get the game running on the console. Fallout 4’s graphics would’ve likely been quite demanding to maintain on the Nintendo Switch, even if they seem a tad dated to us.

There’s also the fact that Fallout 4 boasts an enormous open world.

It could be for the simple reason that Bethesda felt they wouldn’t find a huge player base with most people having already enjoyed the game on other platforms.

Still, it’s a tad melancholy to ponder what could’ve been.

“Drop it on Switch 2 and we are all good,” suggested Mascarpon5, and it’s a decent shout.

It’s already rumoured that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be landing on the Switch 2. Let’s cross our fingers that Fallout 4 will be joining it.
