Nintendo Switch is getting a gorgeous new RPG, and fans of classic Pokémon may want to pay attention.
Modern Pokémon games are popular for their accessibility, wide amount of content, and years-worth of evolutions. But it’s the classic games that a lot of older fans remember most fondly.
And that’s for good reason. Going back to the early generations of Pokémon, it’s clear to see why these games were a formative part of our childhoods and adolescence.
We probably won’t get a new official Pokémon game in the style of the classic series from Game Freak any time soon, but this upcoming indie game might scratch that itch.
What is Doki Monsters: Quest?
Doki Monsters: Quest uses a 2D art style and interface, and is designed around the vibes of those classic Pokémon games we all remember so fondly, while also sporting modern quality-of-life features.

It’s being developed by Red Deer Games, a developer based in Poland which already has a few other classic homages under its belt. Since its founding, the company has primarily worked on games for the Nintendo Switch.
Doki Monsters: Quest has you set out on a quest to find your missing childhood friend, with you collecting and battling creatures along the way in a similar vein to Pokémon games.

“Designed as a love letter to classic handheld RPGs, Doki Monsters: Quest blends the warmth of cartridge-era adventures with modern comfort,” reads the official description over on Red Deer’s website.
“Players can fast-forward battles, toggle tips on or off, track goals easily through a clear quest log, and even switch between an 8-bit or piano soundtrack. Each step of the journey offers freedom, charm, and nostalgia.
“With over 140 monsters to collect, 15+ towns to explore, and post-game rare hunts, this is a retro quest built for discovery. Whether it’s fishing, fighting, or just getting lost in the world’s pixel-perfect beauty – Doki Monsters: Quest invites players to relive the joy of classic creature-collecting adventures.”
So, it sounds like it’ll be right up your alley if you grew up playing Pokémon on Game Boy or Nintendo DS, which is clearly the audience Red Deer is hoping to capture here.
In terms of when to expect Doki Monsters: Quest to drop on Nintendo Switch, Red Deer Games has not given a release date yet. It has simply only stated that the title is coming “soon”.
It also may not come to other platforms, there's no clarity on that end just yet.
