Somebody got Grand Theft Auto V running on the Nintendo Switch, which went about as well as you’d expect.

It’s no secret that Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most successful games of all time, recently surpassing 180 million sales years after its initial release. Its playerbase is still as active as ever too, whether it be enjoying the latest updates on GTA Online, or modding the game with the latest graphical and performance enhancements.

Take a look at a mod that completely remasters GTA: Vice City below.

Just when we thought GTA V was all out of surprises, the game threw us a curveball, after being successfully played on a Nintendo Switch of all things.

A YouTuber by the name of Geekerwan turned their Nintendo Switch into a Steam Deck by forcing it to run Linux software, allowing several games not usually available on the Nintendo Switch to be playable.

As you’d expect, the results varied, with larger, more visually impressive, games struggling to hit playable frame rates. One of these games was Grand Theft Auto V, which completely fell apart under the Switch’s hardware. Even after messing around with graphical settings, gameplay couldn’t make it past 6-8 frames per second, so it was more like watching a slideshow than playing a video game.

Obviously this isn’t surprising, as in order for a game like GTA to work on the Nintendo Switch it needs to be properly optimised for the system, which isn’t something Geekerwan could do solo. If Rockstar wanted to do so, it probably could, especially since equally massive open-world games like The Witcher 3 run on the Switch with little to no technical issues, aside from a drop in graphical fidelity.

That being said, Rockstar isn’t interested in Grand Theft Auto V anymore, as it’s still working away on the highly-anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, which could be releasing at some point next year according to recent leaks.

One thing is basically certain though, don’t expect a Nintendo Switch port of GTA VI when it releases, it’s just not going to happen.

Grand Theft Auto V is available on Xbox, PlayStation and PC platforms.
