Pirates of the Caribbean Open-World Game Has Us Losing Our Minds

Why is all the fun gone?

Given how popular the Pirates of the Caribbean movies were and how popular pirate-based video games are more generally, it's a surprise that we haven't seen more attempts to adapt the franchise into our favourite medium.

If you were around in the 2000s and early 2010s then you'll know that those games do exist, but they are, for the most part, really quite disappointing, failing to capture the charm of the films while at the same time not offering much in the way of exciting gameplay.

The success of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is evidence enough the appetite is there for a good open world pirate game and with the rumours that that is set to be remade in the near future, who's to say a Pirates of the Caribbean game couldn't work well.

Unfortunately, it seems we are pretty close to getting just that back in 2010 with the cancellation of the game that really looks like everything we've ever wanted.

The Cancelled Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned Game Looks Incredible

Over on Twitter/X, a user shared a post with some screenshots from the cancelled game, with the following caption, "Thinking about the open world Pirates of the Caribbean game that was cancelled in 2010… Disney I need you to wake up and realise just how cool a new PotC game could be."

The screenshots included with the post give us a look at what might have been, and it's fair to say that the game looks incredible, particularly given they were taken at some point before 2010.

Over on YouTube, you can find some footage of the game on the NeoGamer - Video Game Archive page, and the comments section is full of fans lamenting the fact that the game never saw the light of day.

"It looks and it sounds terrific as a project. It's a pity that it was cancelled. It definitely could find its audience, and if it could not entirely recuperate, it would still could cover some of the time, money and heart put by the team in this project," one said.

"What really p**sed me off is that this game was only three months from being released before it was cancelled, and all because Disney thought releasing a Tron game that didn't even look that appealing was the better option," another added.

Sadly, it seems like this one is gone forever, down to the briny deeps, never to be seen again.
