The real reason why Luke Skywalker died has been explained by Mark Hamill himself. And while it may blow your mind, it actually makes a lot of sense.
Without question, Star Wars is one of the most popular movie franchises of all time. It’s provided countless memories on the silver screen, tons of live-action and animated spin-offs, video games, board games, and so much more.
For better or worse, Star Wars fans continue to stick with the franchise set in a galaxy, far, far away, created by George Lucas. It’s fair to say that we’ve had plenty of good times and a few not-so-good. The original trilogy will always be peak to me. I have so many memories watching Star Wars: A New Hope, The Return of the Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back as a child, especially around Christmas.
In recent years, we’ve also been blessed with a fantastic live-action series on Disney Plus, such as Andor, set just before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and A New Hope.

Then, for every bit of goodness that Star Wars has brought us over the years, we’ve had The Acolyte, The Phantom Menace and the most recent movie, 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
Other than 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, that sequel trilogy was absolute trash. In my opinion, The Rise of Skywalker is at its forefront and a sad conclusion in the worst way.
Wedged in between Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker, we have Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. I know there’s somewhat of a mixed reception when it comes to The Last Jedi, but having watched it two or three times, that’s more than enough for me.

We Said Goodbye to Luke Skywalker
One of the most controversial scenes in The Last Jedi (one of a few) is the death of Luke Skywalker. Granted, Luke died saving the day and went out the hero that he always was.
The only problem is, his death was very underwhelming. In a nutshell, he manifested himself to appear in front of Kylo Ren to wind him up and to be a distraction in the Battle of Crait. When his job was done, he puffed into thin air, sat on a rock (not Dwayne Johnson).
As much as I don't like that scene, it all made some sense. Luke gave his last bit of life he had left using the Force, and that’s what ultimately killed him. It seems I, like many, was right as to why Luke Skywalker died in The Last Jedi.
“Mark Hamill says that he finds it 'funny that people miss the irony that [Luke Skywalker] died from an overdose of the Force',” shared Redditor sreekotay, featuring an image of a Star Wars comic, detailing that scene from The Last Jedi, and a quote from Hamill.
The quote continued: “‘I mean, who knew that was even a thing? Don’t you think if there was even a marginal chance that using the Force could be lethal, Obi-Wan would’ve said ‘Use the Force in moderation, Luke?’.
"Or Yoda would’ve said, ‘Overdo Force projection, you must not?’ Nobody warned me! But obviously, they concluded his story; he died."
So, there you have it, that’s either new information or something you already knew. Either way, there it is.
