Players go wild for free Game Pass extraction fantasy title that combines Elden Ring and Arc Raiders

So far, the extraction genre has been monopolised by guns and bullets.

Unloading looted lead in Escape from Tarkov, Call of Duty's DMZ mode, and ARC Raiders have been the only way to enjoy the grindable, scalable, enjoyable take on a multiplayer PvPvE experience.

Yet what happens when you take that blueprint and sprinkle in a bit of soulslike, Elden Ring-esque combat, trading a 50. cal for a greatsword or battleaxe?

Well, that's the recipe for Mistfall Hunter, and this fantasy extraction is everything we could have hoped for.

Mistfall Hunter 'scratches that itch' of a fantasy extraction dream

Having become the home of multiplayer shooters, Xbox Game Pass has recently begun championing more titles than its typical franchises like Gears of War: E-Day.

With one foot in the fantasy door - carried by The Elder Scrolls - the perfect blend of their two loves has now landed in the lap of the Game Pass, and straight off the bat, Mistfall Hunter has impressed.

Described as 'a dark fantasy extraction ARPG', Mistfall Hunter plunges players into a 'forbidden realm consumed by the mist.'

"Caught in a ruthless loop of high-stakes looting, deadly combat, and desperate extractions, you must fight for your life in the shadows to experience the ultimate dark fantasy survival test," reads the description.

Whether you're running solo or with a small band of rebels, the objective is to loot as much gear that complements your character type, fight enemy squads with blades or arcane arts, escape the realm with your bounty, and gear up for the next run to continue growing.

With endless build possibilities, the new take on the extraction genre has been applauded, despite some slight performance woes on high-end PCs.

"I was really craving an extraction game that didn’t revolve around guns, and there just aren’t many options out there. Mistfall Hunter scratches that itch," one glowing review reads.

"The art style is clearly inspired by Elden Ring, but don’t go in expecting it to play like it — this is very much its own thing."

A second player wrote, "I'm really enjoying the game. The combat is interesting, feels good and easy to pick up. Graphics are nice and the map design is interesting with lots of levels."

Even those buying the game off Steam have enjoyed it, despite complaints of frame drops on the platform.

"A brilliant blend of many other successful titles. If you would enjoy a less punishing version of Dark and Darker with the combat of Elden Ring, this is for you. Worth every penny," another reviewer said.

A second Steam purchaser added, "Gameplay feels like a great balance of approachability while also having a high skill ceiling potential on all the classes. Have seen some people complaining about balancing issues, but every fight I have lost I feel there were multiple mistakes or things I could have done differently to come out on top. Don't listen to the haters! For $25, this game is an absolute steal!"

Many comments said the drops aren't as big of an issue as people have claimed, too, which seems to be the only complaint.

"I had some lag with the Game Pass version but the Steam one runs perfectly fine. The game is quite fun if you got 1-2 friends to sign up with," another said.
