Brendan Fraser Gets Heartwarming Gift On 'Batgirl' Set, Because Everybody Loves The Guy

Brendan Fraser Gets Heartwarming Gift On 'Batgirl' Set, Because Everybody Loves The Guy

You know we love a wholesome Brendan Fraser story here.

On the set of the upcoming Batgirl movie, actor Brendan Fraser was surprised with a delicious-looking cake to celebrate his 53rd birthday. Perhaps the pièce de résistance is the fact that it is decorated to honor the comic book villain that Fraser is playing in the movie. You just love to see it.

Joss Whedon was originally on board to develop the Batgirl movie a few years ago, however, he departed and Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson stepped up to the plate to provide a script. Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah joined afterwards with actor Leslie Grace attached to play the heroine. J. K. Simmons reprises his role as Commissioner James Gordon from Justice League and Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Intriguingly, Batman is also apparently putting an appearance in the movie, though whether it is Ben Affleck or Robert Pattinson clocking in to the set is currently unknown.

Brendan Fraser is playing the villain Garfield Lynns, also known as his alias, Firefly. Suffering a traumatic childhood, Garfield was considered to be a problematic case by his carers in the St. Evangelina Home for Orphans. As an adult, he landed a job as a pyrotechnics and special effects expert in the film industry, yet once the industry collapsed resulting from the extreme poverty in Gotham City, he used his skills for arson and robberies. When he escapes from Arkham Asylum, he rampages through the city, setting fire to a chemical factory but is trapped in the flames. Miraculously, he survives and designs a fireproof battle suit to protect himself from the fires he starts.

Casting Fraser, who was the world's sweetheart in the '90s and still is today, is an inspired moment from the DC higher ups. In this photo of Fraser, El Arbi and Fallah, it looks like he's in costume as a metalsmith with his sleeves rolled up and a leather apron. Whether or not it's a cover for his criminal activities or a new backstory for the character, I approve of the cleverness at work here. His first day on set in Glasgow just so happened to be his birthday too, and the directors wanted to celebrate, so they and the rest of the crew got him a cake decorated with his name and red, orange and yellow flames.

In the accompanying video, it's clear that Brendan thinks that this is El Arbi and Fallah messing about during a break from filming, and then singing starts to fill the room. He instantly twigs what is going on and jokingly chastises the two as the cake is set down on the table in front of him. "My brother," says Fallah, adding "WE LOVE YOU, WE LOVE YOU!" Adorable.
