Metal Gear Solid 6 is finally on the horizon after 9 years

Could Metal Gear Solid 6 finally be on the way?

It looks like it’s going to be an exciting time for fans of Konami’s legendary tactical espionage Metal Gear series, at least that’s what may have been teased.

Not only do we have a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater on the way this year but recently, Konami has teased the prospect of other remakes from the series created by Hideo Kojima. Whether we get another remake of Metal Gear Solid originally released for the PlayStation in 1998 or a new sequel, remains to be seen.

The Metal Gear series began in 1987 for the NES and has since received many sequels in the generations that followed. We know that the MGS3 remake, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, is arriving in 2024 but what else? We’ll likely get Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.2 which could include Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. If the fourth numbered entry in the series is included in the collection, it would be its first release outside of the PlayStation 3 since it initially launched in 2008.

During a recent Konami livestream on YouTube, dubbed the ‘Metal Gear Production Hotline’, current series producer Noriaki Okamura and promotion manager Jiro Oishi spoke of what the future may hold. In a Q&A section, the duo stated that a release date for Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.2 is yet to be decided internally. When asked if Konami plans on creating new games, they said that the current focus is on Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, but depending on the success of the remake, Konami may consider more remakes or even a new game in the series. No further details were provided, which leaves us to speculate.

I’ll do my best to avoid spoilers here but the last proper sequel in terms of chronological order is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, followed by the spin-off, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, the latter of which was developed by Platinum Games and starred cyborg ninja, Raiden as the protagonist.

However, released in 2015, the last numbered entry is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which is a prequel to the vast majority of the series. That being said, the ending of MGS4 is very conclusive which would have some complications for a sequel. So if I were to take a guess, if we do get a new game, its story could be a new tale wedged in between other games or if it was to be an actual sequel to MGS4 or even Revengeance, perhaps Raiden could be the one to take the series forward or we can just clone a certain character. No one said that the Metal Gear lore was simple.

As for what we know for sure, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vo.2 will arrive at some point and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will be released this year for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
