Medal Of Honor: Frontline’s lead designer Chris Cross has shared his thoughts on what a modern remake of the beloved 2002 WWII shooter might look like.

It’s been 20 years since Frontline originally released for PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox, but it’s still widely remembered as an ambitious cinematic experience that pushed the consoles to their limit. The opening D-Day mission, in particular, was nothing short of technical wizardry that blew a generation of gamers away.

Take a look at the latest entry in the Medal Of Honor saga below!

The Medal Of Honor series has been largely forgotten these days, of course, ultimately making way for the likes of Battlefield and Call Of Duty. But is there still room for a series like Medal Of Honor in 2022? Cross thinks so, although there’d be some big changes.

Speaking to GAMINGbible for the 20th anniversary of Frontline, Cross explained his remake of the WWII shooter would be an entirely different beast to the original. He’d do away with a lot of the more action-oriented shooting in favour of a stealth-focused game that borrowed more from Assassin’s Creed.

“Medal of Honor at its heart was a spy game,” Cross explains. “I would lean back into the spy aspects and not the shooting aspects. If we remastered Frontline, I would go back to a single objective for each mission, make the levels open world, and let people finish the objectives however they wanted. Really lean into a solitary survival experience and de-emphasize the combat as only a necessity to finish the mission if there wasn't a stealth or spy way to do it. Take a lot of inspiration from the Assassin's Creed series.”

It's certainly an interesting sounding direction for the franchise, and one that would really help set it apart from the other, more popular shooters of today. I could definitely see Medal Of Honor striking a balance between Hitman 3 and Sniper Elite 5, combining stealth action with first-person shooting in sandbox-style levels. Will it ever happen? Probably not, but it's nice to dream.
