'Marvel's Wolverine' Enlists 'Spec Ops: The Line' Writer As Narrative Director

'Marvel's Wolverine' Enlists 'Spec Ops: The Line' Writer As Narrative Director

Walt Williams is best known for his incredible work on the acclaimed shooter.

Insomniac Games know what they’re doing when it comes to superhero-inspired titles. Coming up, we’ve got Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on the way but perhaps even more excitingly, Insomniac shocked us all when they unveiled Marvel’s Wolverine at last year's The Game Awards.

It’s still early days for the game and we know very little about what the gameplay might look like. Based on Insomniac’s previous Marvel entries, we’d expect it to be a single-player adventure potentially set within the world of Marvel’s Spider-Man. That being said, a recent tweet has proved that the game is now starting to take shape so we could soon learn more.

Remind yourself of the incredible reveal trailer for Marvel's Wolverine below.

Taking to Twitter, video game writer Walt Williams updated his bio to announce that he’d been hired as narrative director for Marvel’s Wolverine. Williams has previously written for a number of major titles including Spec Ops: The Line, Star Wars: Squadrons, Battlefield II, and Significant Zero.

If you haven’t yet played 2K Games’ Spec Ops: The Line let me tell you, the narrative is incredible - and deservedly won a ton of awards. The war-based shooter confronts the fact that players are ‘enjoying’ a war-based game, using lead character Captain Martin Walker as a vessel to slowly unravel the horrors of war. It’ll be interesting to see if that same theme of morality runs throughout Marvel’s Wolverine given the character's penchant for violence. (You can read a lot more about the game in our recent feature.)

Wondering exactly what a narrative director gets up to? Well the role can vary from studio to studio but essentially the narrative director works across the various departments to make sure each is serving the narrative.

Marvel’s Wolverine will of course be a PlayStation exclusive and perhaps more importantly, a PlayStation 5 exclusive. The game’s release is tentatively scheduled for 2023 at the earliest so we’ve got some waiting to go, but it’s nice to know that things are progressing.
