Vast majority of PS5 owners consider it their main console versus Xbox Series X owners

I’d like to think that the ‘console war’ era is well and truly over, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have favourites - and it looks as if PlayStation is winning the popularity contest. A new survey has revealed that more PlayStation 5 owners in the UK are likely to consider it their main console compared to Xbox Series X/S owners.

We’re over two years into the PlayStation 5’s life-cycle and it feels like the console is just starting to reach its true potential. PlayStation boss Jim Ryan recently confirmed that the PlayStation 5 shortages are finally over, and we’re seeing more studios opt to create PlayStation 5 exclusive games. Guerrilla is just one recent example, following the announcement of Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores. What this latest survey reveals about the console though, is that PlayStation 5 owners are extremely loyal.

As reported by VGC, a survey by Ampere Analysis has found that 71% of participants who owned the disc version of the PlayStation 5 said it is the console they use the most. Only 48% of those who own an Xbox Series X would consider it to be their main console, followed by 35% for the Xbox Series S. The Nintendo Switch fared slightly better with 49% of owners considering it to be their main system.

For those who own the digital-only version of the PlayStation 5, 43% class it as their primary console. It’s hardly surprising that both PlayStation and Xbox’s disc-drive consoles have proved to be more popular. It’s long been assumed that the Xbox Series S appeals to those looking for a secondary console, mainly with the intention of accessing the Game Pass library.

Ampere went on to suggest that “PS5 owners are more likely to be single console owners,” perhaps because of the hefty cost of the console. It added that this “does not fully explain the disparity in this measure between the PS5 disc-based version and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, its key competitor on the market, having launched at the same time.” I’m in the majority. I must admit, I do love my PS5.
