The next installment in the Mafia franchise has finally been shown and it will be abandoning America in order to go back to the roots of the mafia.

Titled, Mafia: The Old Country, the series will explore the origins of organised crime as it developed in Sicily in the early 1900s.

There was no gameplay shown in the trailer that was unveiled at Opening Night Live from Gamescom, but we did see lots of gorgeous shots that hint at what’s to come.

Previous leaks had put this entry in the franchise as a prequel and it seems they were right as we’ll likely play through the initial footsteps of how the mafia came to be.

The game is being developed by Hangar 13 who remade the original Mafia recently and have now been handed the keys to the series. It will be published by 2K Games.

Hangar 13 president, Nick Baynes, spoke on the prequel saying, “We're going back to the roots of what fans love about the Mafia franchise.”

He continued by explaining that the studio is “Crafting a deep, linear narrative with that classic mob movie feeling.”

Details are thin on the ground, but you only have to look at Hollywood and their attempts at telling stories of early mafia days to get a sense of the project.

From the trailer, we saw soldiers during World War One, lemons being picked in Sicily, a discarded shotgun, grand houses, and much more.

We imagine that gameplay will be very similar to previous entries in the franchise, with action and dramatic scenes playing out regularly.

Of course, Sicily is a very different place to America, so perhaps we’ll see a more sedate and tense affair this time around, playing more on the emotions of characters rather than action-packed shootouts.

Mafia: The Old Country will be released in 2025, though no specific window has been set in stone.
