'Lost' Actor Mary Mara Dies Following Tragic Accident

Awful news

Mary Mara, an actor best known for her roles in ER, Ray Donovan, and Lost, has died after drowning in New York's St. Lawrence River. She was 61 years old.

According reports, Mara was visiting her sister in Cape Vincent, New York. She had decided to go for a swim in the river to exercise, it's believed.

A Syracuse native, Mara's big acting debut came in 1989's Blue Steel. Throughout the early 90s, she appeared in a handful of episodes of Law & Order and NYPD Blue before a substantial recurring role on ER. After nine episodes on the popular medical drama, Mara won the lead role in the first two seasons of Nash Bridges.

Over the next three decades Mara was a consistent face on American TV, showing up in several popular shows including Star Trek: Enterprise, Nip/TuckDexter, and Lost. She also briefly flirted with the stage, appearing alongside Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer in Twelfth Night back in 1989.

A statement released by New York State Police on Monday claims that no signs of foul play were found during the initial investigation.

"When Troopers, along with Cape Vicent Fire and Ambulance arrived on the scene, they discovered a female deceased in the St. Lawrence River," the statement reads.

"The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Mary T. Mara from Cape Vincent, NY. The preliminary investigation suggests the victim drowned while swimming. The victim's body showed no signs of foul play and was transported to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office pending an autopsy to determine an official cause of death. The investigation is continuing."
