Lord Of The Rings is one of the most iconic film franchises, up there with Harry Potter and Star Wars in terms of pop-culture influence.
It’s been several years since the original trilogy dropped and was later followed up by the less impressive The Hobbit trilogy.
Since then we’ve had an Amazon Prime prequel series but now we’re getting another prequel in the form of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
It’s obviously a prequel as we see Gollum perish at the end of The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King.

Several actors from the Lord Of The Rings/The Hobbit trilogy will be reprising their roles such as Andy Serkis as Gollum, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn and Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf.
Frodo is also rumoured to be returning, and we think we have a good idea of who’ll be stepping into the hobbits shoes, not that hobbits wear shoes.
Elijah Wood hasn’t confirmed he’ll be coming back but has said he’s seen the scripts and knows quite a bit about its production.
Speaking at Mexico's DesertCon (via CBR) the actor said “Well, I can't say anything about that. I know a great deal about it. I've read it. It's really good. There are some wonderful people involved. The thing that is so exciting is that it is really getting the creative band back together. The brain trust behind Lord of the Rings, Fran, Peter, Philippa, they are heavily involved."

He went on to say “It is going to be shot in New Zealand, so it is going to carry with it such continuity with so many people who are a part of Lord of the Rings, and I am really excited about that.”
While it’d be nice to see Frodo return there is a question about continuity. There are some stories about Gollum that were alluded to during The Lord Of The Rings that were never shown, which is obviously what this film will be about, but since Frodo canonical meets Gollum for the first time in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, so it’s unlikely he’ll be joining the hunt in the prequel.
That said there’d be nothing wrong with Elijah Wood coming back for a scene or two either at the beginning or end of the film, just a brief cameo to see what he’s up to at the time.
