A release date for the upcoming The Lord of the Rings prequel movie has been announced.
In 2024, it was announced that two new The Lord of the Rings movies were on the way, one of which will be a prequel movie starring Gollum, formerly known as Sméagol, with the fantastic Andy Serkis returning to take on the role.
In fact, Andy Serkis will not only be returning as the iconic character once a stoor hobbit before the One Ring corrupted him, but he will also be directing the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

“This film delves into an untold chapter of Middle-earth, focusing on the perilous quest to find and capture Gollum, the creature who once possessed the One Ring,” reads the synopsis on IMDB.
“It takes place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, when Aragorn (known as Strider) is tasked with tracking down Gollum to prevent Sauron from learning the Ring's whereabouts.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is based on the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien rather than being a direct adaptation, such as the 2001 movie, The Fellowship of the Ring, for example.
Originally, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum was intended to be released sometime in 2026, but now it has been officially put back to 17 December 2027, just in time for Christmas, which seems to be a tradition for the movie franchise to release at that time of the year.
The movie is too early in production for us to be treated to a trailer anytime soon, but hopefully we’ll at least get a glimpse of how The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is taking shape by the end of this year.
Of course, we’ll let you know when the first trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum drops.
