The studio behind one of 2025’s biggest games has now confirmed plans to make a new RPG based on The Lord of the Rings.
The Lord of the Rings as a franchise has had video game adaptations since the 1990s, but it was around the time of the Peter Jackson trilogy release that they had arguably hit their peak.
But between the in-development The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum movie and new updates to The Lord of the Rings Online, it looks like Middle-earth fans might be eating well once again.
Warhorse Studios, developer of the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, has now confirmed that it is working on a brand new RPG set in Middle-earth.

Posting on X earlier today, the developer shared: “You might have heard the rumours, it's time to reveal what we are working on,” before listing “an open world Middle-earth RPG” as well as a new Kingdom Come adventure.
It’s unknown if the game will specifically be a Lord of the Rings game or a new story set outside the setting of the War of the Ring. Since Warhorse is calling it a “Middle-earth RPG”, I’m leaning on the latter interpretation.
But knowing how detailed the world of the Kingdom Come games is, it sounds like this game will aim for the same level of authenticity.

When we spoke to Warhorse last month at the 2026 BAFTA Games Awards, creative director Prokop Jirsa addressed the Lord of the Rings rumours by saying: “We can't give you specific details, but yes, great things are coming.”
Communications director Tobias Stolz-Zwilling then added that “One thing we definitely will do and will do forever, hopefully, is RPGs. We want to establish Warhorse as some kind of RPG powerhouse. Whatever comes next should be again a nitty-gritty RPG, we see ourselves there.”
Warhorse Studio’s latest release is Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, which came out last February.
Receiving a 95% recommended rating on OpenCritic, the game topped the best sellers list on Steam and broke even on its budget on the first day of release.
On the first day of release, it hit a peak Steam concurrent player count of 159,351 players, which beat the original game by over 60,000 players. It later broke that record nearly a week later, peaking at 256,206 concurrent players.
In GAMINGbible’s own review for the game, Emma wrote that “There’s so much to love about this Warhorse Studios game,” particularly praising its “stunning graphics” and “gripping story”.
