The Lord of the Rings fans aren’t too happy with the producer’s number one choice for Aragorn for the upcoming The Hunt For Gollum live action film, surprisingly.
The Hunt For Gollum, a new live-action LOTR film directed by Gollum actor Andy Serkis, is set to drop in 2027, and the producers of the film have (what they probably assumed to be) a very safe choice for the role of Aragorn: the trilogy’s original actor, Viggo Mortensen.
In an interview with The Playlist, writer and producer Philippa Boyens was asked about the chances of Mortensen returning for the film.

“Honestly, that’s entirely going to be up to Viggo,” Boyens replied.
“I’ve spoken to Viggo, Andy [Serkis] has spoken to him, Peter [Jackson] has spoken to him, we’ve all spoken to each other and honestly, I cannot imagine anyone else playing Aragorn, but it will be completely and entirely up to Viggo.”
Over on the r/lordoftherings subreddit, fans aren’t too happy with the idea of having Mortensen return… and it sounds like it’s because of the damage that The Hobbit films have done to the fanbase.
“Just no please,” commented user GideonOakwood. “We don’t need another lifeless character edited to make it look young and resulting in an uncanny valley monstrosity.”

“My hope is Viggo will be an Older Aragorn and he is telling the story to his kids,” replied user Ausgrog. “Then the movie is a flashback with a new actor as young Aragorn.”
I get the negative replies. The de-ageing in The Hobbit live-action trilogy didn’t exactly look great, and those films are well over 10 years old at this point.
Whether or not Mortensen returns seems to still be up in the air, but I hope that they don’t go down the route of making him younger through digital means if they do decide to bring him back.
