So, a new Disney movie released less than a week ago, if you can believe it. Yes, we’re talking an actual full-length feature film here, with a theatrical release and all the bells and whistles. However, it seems that it’s somehow passed everyone by.
The film in question is called Strange World - it’s an animated movie directed by Don Hall (Big Hero 6, Raya and the Last Dragon) which follows the tale of the Clades - a family of explorers who must venture into an uncharted and dangerous land full of mysterious creatures, and in doing so, overcome their differences.

So yeah, normal, pleasant Disney stuff, right? Well, as Deadline reports, the film is currently expected to lose around $147 million after a less-than-spectacular $28 million global opening. Ouch. Reacting to this news on Twitter, cinemagoers are pretty sure they know the reason why the film hasn’t been going down well, and it ties right into what I said at the start - no one really knew it existed.

“I didn’t even know this was out? They barely promoted this,” @LaLuxJerm tweeted. “Disney really did NOT want to market this movie huh,” added @PattyNest. “I work in a theatre and this movie was absolutely tanked on purpose. No banners, standees, or promotional materials whatsoever. Even half the people buying tickets didn't know what it was about and were just going since it is Disney and it's the only family movie out right now,” claimed @Str8EdgeMarine.
According to Deadline, Strange World will be added to Disney+ around Christmas, so it might end up getting a second lease of life then. Maybe some people decided to simply wait around for the Disney+ release in the first place, but it’s a shame to see those box office figures so low.
