Avengers: Doomsday leader confirmed, and it's not Captain America

Well, that's unexpected

According to a brand-new report, we finally have our Avengers: Doomsday leader and fans will be surprised to learn that it is not Captain America.

As the days go on, we are getting closer and closer to the release of Avengers: Doomsday which hits cinemas on 18 December 2026.

Not only will this be one of the first movie releases in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Six but it will also be the first Avengers movie since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

With a brand-new team set to become Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, speculation has been swirling over who will lead them and despite many assuming that it will be Captain America, it seems as though we were indeed wrong.

According to a report by Variety, it is Mister Fantastic who will be leading the charge in Avengers: Doomsday as well as Avengers: Secret Wars when it follows in 2027.

Portrayed by Pedro Pascal and first appearing on our screens in the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, it seems as though he is about to take on a much bigger role in the MCU.

In the interview, Variety spoke with Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman and it is here that the latter reveals the future for Mister Fantastic.

“Reed was the most challenging role to cast. He goes from being the nerdy scientist who’s locked away in the lab, to the husband and the father who’d do anything to protect his family, to the guy who’s leading the Avengers,” Shakman says.

“I realised that the version we were building had to have all of those elements.”

It is not a set-up we expected but it was not long before the news broke online and fans were quick to share their thoughts.

“He wasn't even in the universe where Avengers belong, and now he'll lead them? It should have been Dr Strange,” one comment read.

Another fan agreed, adding, “Would've thought it would be one of the heroes in the main world. I.e. Cap/Dr Strange.”

It remains to be seen if Pascal’s Mister Fantastic will be a good leader for our brand-new Avengers but in the meantime, we can expect The Fantastic Four: First Steps to hit cinemas on 25 July 2025.
