The Last Of Us won't make Game Of Thrones' big mistake, showrunner promises

The Last of Us won’t make Game of Thrones’ big mistake, the showrunner promises.

The Last of Us won’t make Game of Thrones’ big mistake, co-showrunner Neil Druckmann has promised.

There’s no question that Game of Thrones, the HBO adaptation of George R.R. Martin novels, is one of the biggest TV series of all time. What’s more, the franchise continues to grow further as we lead into the second season of the prequel series House of Dragon. However, as great of a series as Game of Thrones originally was, its last season didn't go down all that well with fans, which was a shame. Thankfully, The Last of Us, also produced by HBO, is looking not to make the same mistakes.

The Last of Us Part I lands on PC on 28 March.

While much of Game of Thrones is based on the source novels, a lot of it is original content and that’s where some believe the series experienced its issues. As reported by Dexerto, when speaking on The Last of Us Spoilercast with Kinda Funny, the series creator Neil Druckmann explained that the HBO series is only signed up to cover the first two games and that was by design.

“The deal we have only goes up to game two,” explained Druckmann. “That’s it. I purposefully wanted things to be that way because I didn’t want to end up in a Game of Thrones situation where now you’re forced to do something you might not feel comfortable with.”

There’s no telling how much The Last of Us will cover with Part II. Some believe that it will take at least two seasons to cover its story. “We’re talking about years from now, and who knows where my mind will be or where Naughty Dog’s mind will be, or [Craig Mazin’s]," continued Druckmann. “So I can’t definitively answer, but right now there’s no plan to do anything beyond adapting the games.”

My initial thoughts on the words of Neil Druckmann concern The Last of Us Part III and if that were to arrive, would it extend the life of the HBO series? After all, not only is the Naughty Dog series one of PlayStation’s most lucrative properties, but the HBO adaptation is also proving to be a massive success. So at least from a business standpoint, it makes total sense to release The Last of Us Part III, not only from a video game perspective but from a TV series perspective too.
