John Wick studio teases big-budget AAA Wick game

After the success of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate are finally ready to enter the world of AAA gaming, with a big–budget John Wick game

After the monumental success of John Wick: Chapter 4, it seems Lionsgate are finally ready to enter the world of AAA gaming releases, with a big–budget John Wick game.

Speaking at a recent earnings call, the company said a video game is definitely still on the table, with group chairman Joe Drake saying: "We are continuing to have those conversations. There's a ton of energy around it," He went on to say the growth of the John Wick series "is very rare in any franchise, much less an action franchise” and “creates a lot of energy and excitement in the company.

John Wick: Chapter 4 was the highest-grossing film in the franchise’s history, so it just makes sense for Lionsgate to want to capitalise on the growing popularity of the series with a stunning game console debut.

Of course, a John Wick game does already exist, John Wick: Hex, which didn’t really live up to fan expectations, as it took a slower, more methodical approach to the character and not the fast-paced, stylish action we see in the films.

A big-budget title could be just what fans were hoping for, especially if it incorporates the hand-to-hand martial arts and gunplay that make the film's action-sequences so memorable and appreciated. It also has the potential to expand the world of John Wick even further, maybe with a story revolving around the “impossible task” that Wick originally had to undertake to escape his obligation to the high table.

John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves, is no stranger to video games either, taking centre-stage in CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 as Johnny Silverhand. Surely Reeves wouldn’t mind lending his voice to the character, maybe even doing some motion capture of the creative ways Wick can be able to dispatch his opponents.

Despite the film series reportedly being “done” in the eyes of the director, the world the films take place in will live on in other ways. Several spin-off titles are in the works, such as the upcoming Ballerina film, as well as a TV series about The Continental, the hotel featured in the series. There’s also potential for a spin-off around Donnie Yen’s character Caine, who played a key role in John Wick 4, and is now being hunted by Rina Sawayama’s character Akira, who wants to avenge her father’s death.
