As we inch closer to Hogwarts Legacy’s release on new-gen consoles and PC, some console owners are worried that the game’s graphical options might not be quite as good as expected.
There’s less than a month to go until the wizarding world RPG hits PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Just last week, the system requirements for PC owners were confirmed, and it was revealed that the console versions will support “multiple graphical modes”, including a 30fps Fidelity mode and a Performance mode which “targets 60 fps”.
Take a look at the introduction to Simon Pegg’s Hogwarts Legacy character, Phineas Nigellus Black, below.
As PlayStation LifeStyle reports, the word “targets” has been causing quite a stir online. On the r/PS5 subreddit, some fans have expressed their concerns that the lack of a fixed frame rate for the Performance mode might not bode well for smooth gameplay.

“60fps target + [variable refresh rate] usually means unstable 50-60fps for non-VRR displays,” one wrote. “Man[,] I hate target 60... me need stable 60!” another user commented. “I have doubts about optimisation and power of current-gen consoles whenever I see 60fps being ‘targeted’ instead of being capped at,” added another.
Last year, Gotham Knights was flamed by gamers due to its frame rate being locked to 30fps on new-gen consoles - some players reported that it even struggled to hit that. At the time of writing, obviously it’s not known if Hogwarts Legacy will face the same level of issues, if any at all when it comes to its performance.
Regardless of its frame rate, not everyone is excited about the game due to its connection to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. Rowling has been heavily criticised for her comments regarding the transgender community, and some have decided to boycott the title altogether as a result.
Hogwarts Legacy will release later in the year for previous-gen consoles and Nintendo Switch - on 4 April and 25 July, respectively.
