Despite it being the best-selling game release of 2023, Hogwarts Legacy still manages to cater a massive divide when it comes to fan opinion.
With some adoring the 2023 RPG due to its ties to the Harry Potter franchise and it giving them the opportunity to live out their childhood Hogwarts dreams, others criticise the Avalanche Software’s lack of imagination.
Players have criticised its lack of content, most importantly since its release, and feel as though its open-world could have been more expansive, especially with so much material to take inspiration from.
However, with Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. now turning its attention to Hogwarts Legacy 2, it seems as though content for the original release is officially over.

That is why one fan over on r/HarryPotterGame shared an interesting theory recently with the belief that Hogwarts Legacy 2 may have originally been planned to be an MMORPG.
As of right now, Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player RPG but was this always the case?
“I get the feeling Hogwarts Legacy was originally planned as an MMO,” user confusingadult shared.
“The map is huge and feels divided into distinct “zones” with their own enemy sets, level ranges, and repeatable resource spots.

Travel between zones uses mounted travel and fast-travel points the way many open-MMO hubs do.
Also a surprising number of side quests are fetch/x-hunt/clear-this-area types, often with almost-identical templates and copy-paste objectives.”

They also draw attention to the gear tiers and cosmetic rarities which is another staple of MMOs and even some activities give the impression that they were originally planned to be daily or weekly grinds.
Others are not convinced
“Overall it’s a decent single player game, 7/10 quite enjoyable, but the pattern and vibe, the way NPC interact. It just feels like MMO,” they continued.

This has not been confirmed by Avalanche or Warner Bros. but it would make sense based on this evidence and fellow players were quick to share their thoughts.
However, user Vulperffs is not convinced.
“Game is not huge. Compared to AC or Witcher or Zelda, the area is quite normal,” they shared.
Leveled areas and many side quests is also normal in single player games. You don’t switch from MMO to single player half development.
Advert
MMOs must be designed completely differently than a local game, it’s completely different code.”
With big plans for Hogwarts Legacy 2, it remains to be seen how large-scale the highly anticipated sequel will be but who knows? Maybe the original release itself was also meant for much bigger things.
