Grand Theft Auto VI could be in trouble following the release of 007 First Light, and we’re not talking about Bond pinching Rockstar’s Game of the Year award.
GTA VI’s release is finally locked in as confirmed by the recent Take-Two Interactive earnings call.
We’re expecting another banger from Rockstar Games as the studio has proven time and time again that it knows how to make an open-world masterpiece, though the recent drama surrounding 007 First Light’s launch has posed an interesting question.
For those who missed it, 007 First Light has been getting flamed for its celebrity cameos, most notably Vine star Khaby Lame.
During one part of the game, Bond asks for directions by a signpost, with the Khaby Lame lookalike gesturing sarcastically at the sign the superspy is ignoring.

Anyone who doesn’t know who Khaby Lame is will have probably thought nothing of the interaction but those who are in the know hate it. Many claim the cameo, along with others like YouTube superstar Jacksepticeye, breaks immersion and are ultimately unnecessary addition.
It inadvertently raised questions about GTA VI, as Bartonovopolis on X made a post saying, “Stuff like this makes me wonder how culturally out of date certain elements of GTA VI will feel with how long it’s been in development.”

Now the Grand Theft Auto games have almost always been a parody of real-life with Grand Theft Auto V being a great example. Look at the passing billboards or tune into the in-game radio and it’s clear no target is safe from Rockstar’s humour.
We still don’t have a clear picture of what GTA VI will be like but what we do know is that it’ll poke fun at Florida. We’ve already seen examples in the game’s initial trailer, like alligators roaming people’s gardens and a character resembling real-life influencer Florida Joker.
Is GTA VI in danger of becoming too meta, though? It’s already rumoured that YouTubers and Twitch streamers like Jake Paul will be featured among the characters found in the game, which is exactly the sort of thing 007 First Light is being roasted for.
That’s not to say a Grand Theft Auto game can’t treat things with levity but there’s clearly a line for what fans deem amusing and irritating.
If GTA VI’s story mode and side missions chase trends like 6-7 and other such social media fads, you just know the internet will be in uproar about it.
What would really put our minds at ease is that blasted third trailer, though following the Take-Two earnings call, it doesn’t sound like we’re getting one until July at the earliest, which is when the game’s marketing is officially said to begin.
That gives you plenty of time to enjoy 007 First Light if you’re not already, which is definitely a Game of the Year contender, cameos an all.
