The wait for Grand Theft Auto VI has remained a constant in our lives for the past decade and now with under a year to go until we can finally get our hands on it, it is quite shocking to look back on how long we have actually waited for the day to come.
Formally revealed back in December 2023 alongside our first official trailer, Grand Theft Auto VI has been on quite a journey since Rockstar’s latest entry, Grand Theft Auto V, was released well over a decade ago.
From massive prison-leading leaks to rumours and delays, we have had it all but with the homestretch finally upon us, one social media account has put in writing how long we have had to wait for the most-anticipated video game of all time.
According to the GTA 6 Countdown Twitter account, GTA VI may be just 40 weeks out from launch but, for perspective, the very first announcement for the game was 184 weeks ago, our first trailer was 89 weeks ago, and finally, it has already been 15 weeks since we first saw the second official trailer.

Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun?
Seeing these numbers definitely puts things into perspective and it is safe to say that Rockstar is the best at keeping its fans waiting.
As you can imagine, these statistics made fans descend on their comments with their thoughts and it is safe to say that the discovery has blown their minds.
“That is still 5.4 dog years away,” one user joked.
Another added, “Looking at these numbers, it seems like a short time but it's still 10 months and 10 months seems like an eternity.”
However, it seems as though the consensus is pure excitement over it being just a few months to go until Grand Theft Auto VI is finally released.
“Time is absolutely flying,” one user shared. “Enjoy the anticipation because before you know it, you will have completed it.”
Whilst we still await our first gameplay trailer, there is no denying that time is flying and by 26 May 2026, we will finally have our hands on the highly-anticipated masterpiece.
