It looks like Rockstar Games is set to reveal Project ROME at some point in the future, following an upcoming release.
In case you missed the news, popular GTA V modding framework FiveM looks like it’s set to finally get a Steam release.
While the framework could be run through the Steam version of GTA V in the past, you had to actually download it from the FiveM website. This should hopefully cut out a lot of compatibility issues though by having it available on Steam.
What’s more, this news may also confirm that Project ROME for GTA VI may indeed be a reality, as was rumoured earlier this year.
Advert
ROME allegedly stands for Rockstar Online Modding Engine, and is believed to be modding tools that will allow people to create their own content and experiences within GTA VI in a user-friendly interface.
This type of content could be custom missions, servers, game modes, all while implementing custom assets and scripts to achieve this.

The idea behind this is that Rockstar’s modding tools will turn GTA VI into a platform for modded content in the same vein as Fortnite Creative or Roblox, where users will be able to publish their own experiences to be enjoyed by millions of players.
Rockstar Is Embracing Modding
In the last few years, Rockstar has shown further interest in supporting modded content in online spaces, as evidenced by its acquisition of FiveM creator Cfx.re in 2023.
With FiveM now potentially launching on Steam, it appears that the publisher is interested in widening the scope of players enjoying modded and roleplaying servers in GTA V, setting up a more seamless modding experience for GTA VI.
“It is my firm belief that is the reason that they purchased FiveM is exactly that — to spin up a metaversal universe of custom-built experiences, and potentially UGC items, with an attached UGC creator economy,” Pete Basgen of WPP agency Wavemaker told Digiday earlier this year. “It will essentially occupy that adult-enumerated space at the top of the ecosystem; there’s a very natural place there for people that graduate from Roblox and Minecraft.”
Of course, one issue with this theory is that Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC version of GTA VI. So it’s doubtful something like this will launch with the game in November 2026.
We can presume a PC version is coming at some point, as Rockstar tends to launch one at least a year after the console release. So that could also be around the time it publishes plans for its modding support with regards to online.
